In this post, we'll be reviewing how to import a PKT file into Civil 3D.
Previously, we've reviewed packet settings, how to create a simple SAC using basic tools, how to create a rounded shoulder, daylight rounding, switches, looping geometry and sequencing.

Quick tip:
Quick tip:
- You can quickly and easily more than one PKT file at once onto a Tool Palette in Civil 3D. No need to import one at a time!
There are 2 ways to import PKT files:
- Tool Palette: When this option is selected, the subassemblies will be imported to the selected tool palette. Select a tool palette by clicking the drop-down arrow. The name of the currently open tool palette is displayed (selected) by default.
- Catalog Library/My Imported Tools: When this option is selected, the subassembly or subassemblies contained in the package file will be imported to the "My Imported Tools" catalog library. If the "My Imported Tools" catalog does not exist, it will be automatically created.
Let's get started!
- Open Civil 3D.
- Open the Tool Palette on the right side of the screen.
- We recommend creating a new palette tab so you have your custom subassemblies all in one place. To do this, right-click where it reads "TOOL PALETTES", select "New Palette" and name it.
- For our example, we named it "SAC". Right-click on the new tab and select "Import Subassemblies".
- A window will appear titled "Import Subassemblies". We need to add a "Source file" by clicking on the icon to the right of the Source file box.
- In our example, we'll bring all of our source files in at the same time by selecting them all and hitting "Open".
- From here, you can select where to import the files. In our example, we're choosing "Tool Palette" and the "SAC" tab from the drop-down menu.
- Now you'll be able to see your imported PKT files in the "SAC" tab under the Tool Palette.
- As you hover over the PKT files, you can read the name and description if it was entered in Subassembly Composer.
