As a team, our goal is to participate in a community service project at least once a month. For February, we helped in the Orem Community Church's community garden.
The Orem Community Church has a community garden on their property that is run by local volunteers. This provide fresh produce to those in need. In 2017, they donated close to 3,000 pounds of fresh produce!
Although it's not planting season, there is still a lot of preparation work that needed to be done. We were asked to pick up trash, collect coffee grounds to spread in the garden as well as spread piles of donated wood chips.
Several local coffee shops graciously donated their coffee grounds to us, including Starbucks, Elevated Grounds Coffee & Espresso, Juice 'N Java, Grinders Coffee House, and Black Rifle Coffee.
On the day of the project, we picked up trash, spread the coffee grounds, and got to work laying down the large piles of wood chips. Some of us used shovels, others brought their four-wheelers!
The wood chip piles were quite large and we had a lot of work on our hands, so we had to get a bit creative. Leave it to a team of engineers & tech guys to craft a drag harrow using a piece of wired fence, a small log, and some spare rope. One of our guys even took a ride!
We were able to get about 90% of the wood chips piles spread in two hours. It was a lot of work, but definitely worth it! The garden is almost ready for planting!
This was a project to remember! Perhaps later in the year, we'll be able to help with planting, weeding, or harvesting!
