No more Google Earth for Civil 3D 2013!!!???

We all look for the WHAT's NEW in Civil 3D this time of year but unfortunately this year they have a big WHAT's MISSING in the 2013 release of Civil 3D.

It looks like as of now there will be no interoperability between AutoCAD Civil 3D and Google Earth.

For some this may not be such a big deal, but for many users out there this is an extremely useful too for conceptual purposes, presentations and/or sharing of information.  I hope they get this fixed.  This is an explanation I received regarding this situation:

Due to limitations on the use of the Google Earth API, AutoCAD® Civil 3D® 2013 does not include API access to allow customers to import Google Earth imagery and/or surfaces directly into Civil 3D. We are aware of the importance of including preliminary surface and aerial imagery in your design workflows and are actively looking for an alternative.  However, we cannot share any specific information about potential future product enhancements. When appropriate, we will communicate technology plans via various channels including Autodesk Labs, Facebook, Blogs and the Civil 3D Discussion Group.

I will keep our readers updated as I learn more.

  1. They are replacing it with a Bing-based mapping service called Project Base Jump.

    See here:

  2. It gets the images in there OK, but NO surface data. And it is a it could go away in 45 days.
