Important tax planning implications updated for the 2012 tax year!!

Both the 'Tax Relief Act of 2010' as well as the 'Jobs Act of 2010' that passed in late 2010 affected Section 179 in a positive way for this 2012 tax year.
Following are the highlights for the 2012 tax year:
2012 Deduction Limit = $139,000

Section 179 Deduction limit after adjustment for inflation has increased to $139,000 (maximum allowance would have been only $25,000 prior to the new legislation).

2012 Limit on Capital Purchases = $560,000

Section 179 Threshold for total of equipment & software that can be purchased has increased to $560,000 (threshold would have been only $200,000 prior to the new legislation).

2012 Bonus Depreciation = 50%

The new law allows 50% “Bonus Depreciation” on qualified assets placed in service during 2012

Please Note:
Section 179 Deduction is available for most new and used capital equipment, and also includes certain software.
Bonus Depreciation can be taken on new equipment only (no used equipment, no software)

Revit Mystery Lock Icon

Have you ever had a lock icon that you weren't sure what it was locking?

Did you know that you can ask it what it is locking and it will tell you?
Simply right-click on the lock icon, and choose the "Show Related" tool.

This allows you to cycle through the associated objects.
You can also "Show" those objects if they aren't already in view.
Pretty cool.

ProSoft represents well at Autodesk University 2012!!

It is about that time to register for classes at Autodesk University 2012!!

ProSoft is represented very well this year by having three separate speakers present a class.  See Gabe Cottam, Tim Douglas and Shawn herring in action at AU.  Their classes are listed below:

Gabe Cottam

Class ID - MP1448

Class Title
AutoCAD® Revit® MEP: Space Schedules for Design Verification and Validation

Description
Space schedules are one of the most underused tools in the AutoCAD Revit MEP software arsenal. This class will give you the tools to go beyond how you are using Revit for your design. In this class we will explore the diverse possibilities of Revit MEP space schedules for verifying and validating your design in a straightforward and easily understood format. We will focus on using space schedules to verify LEED® points, compare design calculations to actual modeled conditions, create and use calculated values, resolve improper units, and implement conditional cell formatting for quick design condition verification. We will also cover the ability to reference space information in other schedule categories, as well as embedding schedules from other categories into space schedules. Stop fighting the software and start harnessing the information in your model to help validate your design and verify that your design intent is actually making it onto the documentation.

Dirty Laundry: Cleaning Up Your Sheets with AutoCAD® Sheet Set Manager

Description
Dirty laundry is no fun! Many have tried it; many have given up on it. This class will show you how to clean those sheets! Sheet Set Manager (SSM), in my opinion, is one of the most underutilized tools available to all AutoCAD software users across the AutoCAD platform. It's designed to save time and money. Understanding SSM can help improve your efficiency and productivity. Impress your colleagues and managers as you modify entire project sheet sets in minutes versus hours. Change common sheet elements, such as page numbering, sheet titles, dates, revision data, and custom fields. In this class, you will learn the ease of how to set up a title block/cover sheet template with fields built into it. We will show you best practices for taking advantage of SSM. You will learn all about fields and the ways to use them in a sheet set to improve your productivity. Finally, you will learn how to set up plotting for a sheet set so that SSM will plot your drawings for you, including e-transmitting those drawings.

Hidden Survey Gems: Using the COGO Editor and Mapcheck Analysis Tools and the New Survey Tools in AutoCAD® Civil 3D® 2013

Description
See how easy it is to input data in the Coordinate Geometry Editor and run results and reports from one simple interface. Some deeds require a lot more input than the typical tools will allow, so one of the only ways to recreate some deeds is by using this COGO Editor. We will also explore some other useful COGO tools. The Mapcheck Analysis tools are a great way of checking things as well, so we will review how to use that tool.

Augmented Reality Plug-In For Autodesk Showcase

Imagine taking a live video, or pre-recorded video with some QR code looking "markers" and then digitally replacing that marker from the video with your design model.  Effectively overlaying you design into the real world, or augmenting reality with your design improvements.
Yep, we can do that.

See the augmented reality plug-in for Autodesk Showcase in "The Lab"
http://labs.autodesk.com/utilities/showcase_ar

Here's a very crude sample video I recorded from my laptop webcam using the techniques described in the Getting Started Guide, and the "Basic Sample Project" that comes with Revit Architecture.

Some very amazing potential for this technology.  How would you like to see it used?

Begs the question "How much longer until this is integrated into mobile devices?"
It's good to live in the future.

Autodesk 360 Cloud Units & Storage FAQs

Ever wonder what you are getting with the Autodesk Cloud services??

How many Cloud Units will it take to use different cloud services?

There are only three specific Autodesk 360 cloud services that require cloud units in order to perform a job:

Autodesk 360 Rendering = 5 CU per Rendered Image
Autodesk 360 Optimization for Inventor = 5 CU per Optimization Run
Autodesk 360 Structural Analysis = 3 CU per Analysis Run

How many Cloud Units do I get with my Autodesk Subscription?

Cloud Units are currently only available through purchase of Autodesk Subscription with a stand-alone product or suite:

100 CU per seat – Stand Alone Products or Standard Suites
250 CU per seat – Premium Suites
500 CU per seat – Ultimate Suites

For example, if you have 10 seats of a Stand Alone Autodesk product (such as AutoCAD) you'll receive 1,000 Cloud Units (10 seats x 100 Cloud Units per seat = 1,000 Cloud Units).

A very detailed explanation can be found at the following link:

Inserting North Arrows into PAPER SPACE

A little AutoCAD tip for you!!
I always ignore this ribbon when it pops up, but it is pretty useful!!

Inserting North Arrows
You add a north arrow in paper space. When you add a north arrow, you assign it to a specific viewport and you specify its location.
You can use a built-in north arrow or load a custom north arrow. You can use any AutoCAD block as a north arrow. You can create north arrows using the AutoCAD Block Editor.
You can copy and paste north arrows within the same paper space layout.
Adjusting North Arrow
If you rotate the north arrow, the map adjusts automatically. Each north arrow has a floating toolbar. Use the toolbar to rotate the north arrow, or to reset it to true north after you rotate it.
If you delete the associated viewport, the floating toolbar will display a warning. To resolve the issue, use the floating toolbar to associate the north arrow to a different viewport, or delete the north arrow.

Adding a North Arrow
  1. Create a display map and add any viewports you need.
Every map file has a default display map. If you do not create other display maps, the north arrow will be added to the default.
  2. Switch to paper space.
  3. Click Layout Tools tab  North Arrow.
  4. Select a north arrow style from the list.
To use a custom style, click Load Custom North Arrow and navigate to the drawing containing the north arrow block.
  5. Select a viewport for the north arrow.
  6. Click a spot to place the center of the north arrow.
The north arrow can be inside or outside the viewport itself.

AutoCAD Civil 3D 2013 Hotfix 1

Autodesk has released a HOTFIX for Civil 3D 2013
This hotfix will address the following issues:
  • This hotfix resolves an issue with the Survey Figures Property Dialog. In the lower section of the panel you can now see the vertex properties for chain type figures.
  • This hotfix resolves an issue when opening an AutoCAD Civil 3D 2013 drawing in Navisworks Manage 2013 with the AutoCAD Civil 3D 2013 Object Enabler installed. After applying the hotfix, importing a drawing using Navisworks Manage 2013 no longer results in the application becoming unresponsive or closing unexpectedly.

Revit Schedules with Graphic Yes/ No Parameters

You've probably seen what happens to your Yes/ No parameters when you place your schedule on a sheet. Revit automatically replaces the check mark with text.

Have you ever wanted to maintain a graphic representation in that Yes/ No column?  Well, you can with a little workaround.  You just need to create a new "Calculated Value" parameter in your schedule and fill out the formula with a simple IF() statement.

The syntax should read:
if(*test*, *YES*, *No*)
Where *test* is the name of your actual Yes/ No parameter (choose this through the ellipses button)
and *YES* is the symbol you want to show if yes
and *NO* is the symbol you want so show if no

The symbols can be copied from the Windows Character Map.  Take care to use the same font that your schedule body uses or it will not show you the character you thought it would.

Use the "Copy" button inside the character map and inside the "Calculated Value" dialog box, use the keyboard shortcut "Ctl+V" to paste your symbol between quotation marks "●".

You can leave the *NO* cell blank by using two quotes with nothing between "".

Finished Product should look something like this:

Revit Family Not Cutting Wall Properly

Ran into a case the other day where a wall hosted family (a towel dispenser in this case) that was cutting through the stud wall just fine, but wasn't cutting through a veneer wall (tile in this case) that was placed along side the stud wall.

If you run into a similar scenario, check the "Unconnected Height" of the wall.  If the unconnected height is less than 6'-0", the wall will behave different from other walls.

From the help file:
"Walls shorter than 6 feet are not cut, even if they intersect the cut plane.
The 6 feet are measured from the top of the bounding box to the bottom of the primary view range. ... When the top of the wall is less than 6 feet, the entire wall shows as projection even where it intersects the cut plane. This behavior always occurs when the Top Constraint property for the wall is specified as Unconnected."

So, to avoid this undesired behavior, simply "Attach" the top of the wall to the floor level or the level above and adjust the offset as needed.
