Revit MEP: Duct System Graphic Overrides

When you start drawing duct or pipe in Revit MEP with the Out Of The Box (OOTB) project template, you may see some color overrides automatically applied.  Where do these come from?  And more importantly, how can we customize them to our own standards?  Let’s start with the “Duct” tool.  Before we even place our first point, let’s look at the “Properties” palette and notice the parameter there, under the “Mechanical” heading, called “System Type”.

This parameter allows us to designate the type of system our duct is without needing to connect to equipment or air devices (as was required in the past).  You will notice that for the OOTB project template, duct system overrides have been set up for each of the available system types (Supply, Return, Exhaust).  Please note, you can add additional system types as needed.  These defaults are meant only to demonstrate possibilities.

These overrides are stored as “Type Properties” of the “System Type”.  The only way to access these properties is by placing an element in that system (you have to model something first).  After placing the duct in the model, select it.  You should see a new tab appear in the ribbon called “Duct Systems”.

Switch to that tab and notice the “Properties Palette” updates to show the properties of the duct system rather than the duct itself.  Click on the “Edit Type” button to access the “Type Properties” of the duct system.  From here you will see the top line is where these “Graphic Overrides” are controlled.  Pick that “Edit” button to change the line “Weight”, “Color”, and “Pattern” as you like.

From the “Type Properties” of the system you can also “Duplicate” the system type to create various types each with unique graphic overrides as needed.  You can also assign the “Rise/ Drop” symbol to be used with the system.

It should be noted that procedures for pipe systems are analogous to the duct procedures shown here.

Revit MEP 2012 Pipe Rise/ Drop Annotation Size

You may have noticed your pipe rise/ drop annotations showing up larger than you would like.
The way that Revit controls these underwent a minor tweak with the 2012 release.  Let’s look first at the “Mechanical Settings” dialog box.

Here we will find the “Pipe Rise/ Drop Annotation Size” setting.

The problem you may run into here is that the rounding doesn't seem to allow you to go less than 1/8”.  This rounding, however, is controlled in an entirely different dialog box: “Project Units”.

You can access the "Project Units" dialog from the manage tab.

In the “Piping” discipline, under “Pipe Size”, the rounding you find here will control the “Pipe Rise/ Drop Annotation Size” which we found earlier under “Mechanical Settings”.  Set this rounding to a finer value (1/32" or 1/64") and then back in the mechanical settings dialog box try adjusting your “Pipe Rise/ Drop Annotation Size” to 3/32” and see how that looks.

Boise Civil User Group - September Meeting

This month's user group is on Thursday September 22, 11am-1pm at the Idaho AGC Building.

This month's sponsored presentation will be given by Shawn Herring of ProSoft.

Topic: "Best Practices when working with Survey Data"
We will be taking a look at the beginning process of all our civil projects; Survey. Working with survey data and getting it to do what you'd like it to do can be a pain sometimes. Have you ever received a bunch of points from the surveyor and wondered, "What's best way to import this data and get started quickly?" For this month's session we will go over importing points, manually creating points and exporting points out for staking. We will create some point groups and look at how point groups can automate the drafting/design process. We will take a quick look at importing a Fieldbook file for that “Field to Finish” option and see how our template can automate the surface creation process.

Don't miss this month's users group and feel free to invite someone including any surveyors you may know. I'm sure there will be something for everyone.

Also, remember lunch is free for all registered users. So PLEASE REGISTER for this meeting.

Registration helps determine the amount of lunch our sponsors provide.

Hope to see you all there!!!

September's Plugin-of the month!

http://labs.autodesk.com/utilities/ADN_plugins/?popupDownload=1

OVERVIEW

This section of Autodesk Labs contains a “plugin of the month" brought to you by the Autodesk Developer Network (ADN). The plugins provided are simple productivity enhancing tools that streamline the use of our design applications. The plugins are developed by Autodesk or by other ADN members.
All of the plugins we provide come with full source code to show what goes on inside and will have taken a relatively small amount of time to develop (from half a day up to about a week). The idea behind this is that nothing we deliver will be especially "out-of-reach" for someone wishing to invest in learning and using our Application Program Interfaces (APIs). Hopefully you are inspired to create your own plugins.

Updated Google Earth Extension for AutoCAD 2012 Family Now Available

The Google Earth extension supports version of AutoCAD as far back as 2007. For this update, only the 2012 compatible technology preview was updated. This is even different from the 2012 update the team made in June of this year. In fact, this update is a complete rewrite that interfaces to Google Earth using a new Java Application Program Interface (API). The former version used the Microsoft COM API (// more), so we'd really like your feedback on this new version atlabs.acad.google@autodesk.com or the AutoCAD 2012 discussion forum.

Maptoacad command does not work In Civil 3D 2012!!

MaptoACAD command does not work in Civil 3D 2012

On the Ribbon (Planning and Analysis) Output Tab\Save Current Map to AutoCAD

According to Autodesk this is a known issue. The plan is to correct this in the next release. You may see this in the Update, SAP or into 2013.

Although there is no direct replacement for this command you may try using the following work-around:

Try using the MAPEXPORTCURRENTMAPTODWG command, this is similar but not the same as the MaptoACAD command.

MAPEXPORTCURRENTMAPTODWG breaks everything down to base AutoCAD Objects.

Navisworks 2012 File Load Error

NAVISWORKS 2012 FILE LOAD ERROR
ERROR:

"Can't load _.NWC because of an internal error"

When a 2011 NWF is linked to a 2011 NWC file and the NWC file is overwritten with a 2012 version. The Navisworks NWF file is expecting to link to a 2011 file but encounters a different, newer version than expect.

WORKAROUND:

1. Create a new NWF file from scratch from the newer files
2. Publish the working NWF file into an NWD file for reference and import it into or build a new NWF
3. Append or Merge the newer NWC models into the project and delete or hide the older models

4. Manually rename the offending files and Append or Merge the newer files into the NWF
To do this, it requires a working, non-erroring NWF file, before the user overwrites with the newer NWC file.
